Why you need a plan, not another diet

Most people who try to lose weight start with enthusiasm, cut carbs or skip meals, and give up after a week or two because "it isn't working." The problem is almost never willpower — it's the lack of a plan: not knowing how much to eat, what to eat, or when to expect results.

This guide has 4 simple steps. Each one uses a tool or article that already exists on this site, so by the end you'll have a calorie target, a menu, the basic knowledge you need, and a tracking plan for the next month.

Step 1: Calculate how many calories you need

Everything starts with one number: how many calories your body burns per day. Without it, every diet is guesswork.

Open the calorie calculator, enter your sex, age, weight, height and activity level, and you'll get three targets: for weight loss, maintenance and weight gain. Write down the one that matches your goal — that's the number you'll work with all month.

  • To lose weight: your target will be about 500 calories below maintenance.
  • To gain weight: your target will be about 500 calories above maintenance.
  • Be honest about activity: most people overestimate it. If you sit most of the day, choose the lower level.

Step 2: Pick a menu that matches your target

A calorie target is only useful if you know how to turn it into food on your plate. The menu creator has full-day menus for 1,600, 1,800, 2,150 and 2,500 calories, in balanced, keto, vegan and paleo styles.

Choose the menu closest to the target from step 1, in the style that's easiest for you to stick with. The best menu isn't the "perfect" one — it's the one you'll still be eating on day 25.

  • Keep it simple: repeat the same 2–3 breakfasts and lunches through the week. Fewer decisions means fewer slip-ups.
  • Plan ahead: make a shopping list from the menu so the right food is already at home.
  • Leave room for flexibility: one meal out won't ruin a month. Just return to the menu at the next meal.

Step 3: 3 must-read articles before you start

You don't need to become a nutrition expert. But there are three basics that make a big difference once you understand them. Spend half an hour on them in your first week:

  1. How many calories to eat per day: what's behind the number from the calculator, and why you shouldn't go below a safe minimum.
  2. Healthy proteins guide: protein protects muscle while you lose weight and keeps you fuller — your strongest tool against hunger.
  3. Running vs walking: which activity suits you, how many calories each burns, and why a daily walk is a great place to start.

Step 4: Give it time — commit to one month

This is where most people fall off. Weight doesn't move in a straight line: it jumps day to day because of water, salt, carbs and when you weigh in. Losing half a kilo (about 1 lb) a week is an excellent pace — but on any single day it's completely hidden by those swings.

So don't judge the plan by one weigh-in. Work like this:

  • Weigh in consistently: every morning, after the bathroom and before eating or drinking, on the same scale.
  • Check every 4 days: average your last 4 weigh-ins and compare it with the previous 4 days. The average should move toward your goal — down for weight loss, up for weight gain.
  • If the average doesn't move for two checks in a row (8 days): lower your daily target by 100–200 calories (or raise it if your goal is to gain), then check again.
  • One month minimum: commit to 30 days before deciding whether the plan works. Only a month of consistency shows the real picture.

If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take medication, talk to a doctor or dietitian before making major changes to your diet.
