What Anabolic Steroids Actually Are
Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are synthetic derivatives of testosterone. They bind to androgen receptors throughout the body, dramatically increasing muscle protein synthesis — which is why they produce muscle growth well beyond what's achievable naturally, especially when combined with training and a calorie surplus.
Legitimate medical uses exist (severe muscle wasting, some hormone conditions), always under close medical supervision and monitoring. The overwhelming majority of non-medical use for physique or performance is unsupervised and unmonitored.
Why "Enhanced" Has Become More Normalized

Cardiovascular Risk — The Most Serious Concern

Psychological Effects
High-dose steroid use is linked to increased irritability and aggression ("roid rage" isn't purely a stereotype), mood swings, and in some users, dependency-like patterns — continuing use despite negative consequences, and significant mood disturbance during withdrawal.
Why Unsupervised Use Is Riskier Than Medical Use
The legitimate medical uses of AAS happen with bloodwork before and during treatment, cardiovascular screening, and dose control. Unsupervised use — the overwhelming majority of physique-related use — typically skips all of it: no baseline bloodwork, doses far above any studied medical range, no cardiovascular monitoring, and compounds sourced from an unregulated black market with the same contamination risks as SARMs and peptides.

The muscle-building effects of anabolic steroids are real, which is exactly why they're tempting — but so are the cardiovascular, liver, hormonal, and psychological risks, and those risks compound with dose, duration, and lack of medical monitoring.
